Publications Student of the Month: March 23

Introducing our Publications Student of the Month for March... Erika Hernandez from Miami Dade College's Padron Campus! Erika was nominated by her advisor, Omar Figueras!

Here is what Omar shared with us about Erika: "Erika Hernandez obtained her high school diploma from Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida, where she participated in their Million Dollar Marching Band as a clarinet player. She is currently in the Honors College Dual Language Program at Miami Dade College. At the Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, she is taking her prerequisites down the path of recreational therapy or early childhood studies. Her work with children was recognized in her summer internship at a non-profit out of Miami’s Overtown District called Touching Miami with Love. At TML, she assisted teachers with safeguarding children and creating lesson plans to teach children math, literacy, art, and STEM. She also helped the social media department at TML using Canva. Much of her time goes to voter engagement, such as canvassing, phone banking, and rallying with SAVE LGBT. Her biggest strengths are engaging voters and educating them on how they can make a difference, as well as training new canvassers. She earned a certificate for completing a 6-hour Mental Health First Aid training. Finally, as a Director of the podcast team for the Urbana Literary and Arts magazine, her work has been recognized by the “Best of Show Award,” where the Urbanites podcast earned 4th place.

Erika has taken the helm of our Urbanites Podcast and has helped create and develop new material for the series and online and print versions of Urbana. Her bright energy and warm spirit serve as a beacon to our publication. It is an honor and pleasure having her on our staff."

Congratulations to Erika and our thanks to Mr. Figueras for taking the time to nominate her!
