State Brain Bowl Champs: State College of Florida "Phoenix"

The FCSAA State Brain Bowl Tournament took place this past weekend, April 15-16 at the Spring Hill campus of Pasco-Hernando State College. Congratulations go out to the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's Brain Bowl team "Phoenix" as they successfully achieved the title of State Champions for a second year in a row! 


After ending the preliminary rounds with an 11-0 record, the SCF Phoenix team took on Tallahassee Community College's team in the Championship round. The final match-up resulted in a win for SCF 605 to 275. 


Michael Freedman, SCF's team caption, was also the recipient of the Dave Ehlert High Point Award for earning the most points individually. Other team members also were recognized for their individual high points: Paul Foerster (14th), Haley Miller (16th) and David Espinal (27th).


Freedman has been accepted to both New College and University of Florida, and plans to focus his studies in mathematics and physics. He has mentioned he plans to play on the Brain Bowl team there. Other team members have similar goals set. David Espinal plans to compete in the Brain Bowl team again next year, while completing his Associate's degree. With plans to graduate in December, Espinal wishes to further pursue a bachelor of science in nursing degree at SCF. Haley Miller will attend University of South Florida next year and plans to major in either mathematics or literature.
