One of our Student Government Division students, Carolyn Pardilla of Miami Dade College, has been awarded as the Student of the Month for March! She was nominated by her advisor, Kim Tupy.
Here is what Kim told us about Carolyn: "Carolyn emerged as a student leader around the mid-point of her freshman year. She was moved by the school shooting in Parkland and began to get involved with SGA. Later, she traveled to Washington DC to take part in the March for Our Lives movement. She was appointed as an SGA Officer and became the Assistant Secretary for academic year 2018-19. Since then, she has led and partnered on countless initiatives to better our campus and community. In the Fall she signed up to be an intern with Engage Miami to register voters and increase voter turnout among young people. Additionally, she logged 60hrs volunteering for political campaigns. She kept up with her school work, responsibilities as an SGA Officer, and political engagement, all while managing to partner on campus projects like fundraising for United Way, promoting FAFSA completion with peers, “Fight Like a Girl” Breast Cancer Awareness, Relay For Life, and a campus beach clean-up. She kicked off the Spring semester volunteering in a local park for MLK Day of Service. She’s currently preparing for a trip to Japan as she was selected for the KAKEHASI Inouye Program through the office of international Education of Miami Dade College. The purpose of the program is to increase mutual understanding and build a network of future leaders in US-Japan relations. Applicants had to provide a Statement of Purpose essay and a Follow-up Service essay explaining what activities and projects they will create after the trip. Carolyn will graduate this Spring with her Associates in Arts in Political Science, she’s still deciding on which university is next, but her ultimate goal is Law School.
One of Carolyn’s greatest skills is her ability to use her voice. She admits that while she is not shy, she does get nervous, but this never stops her from speaking up in order to motivate her peers or stand up for what she believes in. She sets an example for those around her by holding to her commitments, always being on time and present for meetings, and being one of the first to volunteer when opportunities for service arise. Carolyn demonstrates her leadership clearly and with confidence in her role as a Mentor in our Peer Mentoring program. She mentors a class of incoming freshmen, assisting them with success tips for navigating college. She is always available to them and goes above and beyond to be helpful for her mentees. It is inspiring to see her empowering her peers and those around her."
Congratulations to this spectacular individual, Carolyn Pardilla, for being chosen as our SGA Student of the Month for March! And another thank you to Kim Tupy for nominating Carolyn for this award!
