Publications Student of the Month: May

Congratulations to Sara Varela, Broward College, selected as the Florida College System Activities Association Publications Division Student of the Month for May.

Here’s what Sara shared with us: “I've been editor-in-chief of the Observer for two years, and I've been recognized with three writing awards from the Florida College System Press Association, including First Place for General Column in 2017. I'm also the first community college student to be accepted and participate in the POLITICO Journalism Institute, which is a two-week program in Washington, D.C., where I wrote one story published by POLITICO.com accompanied by a 2-minute video that I produced, shot, and edited myself (https://www.politico.com/ story/2017/06/08/lawmakers- fight-for-deported-us- veterans-239334).  Over the past two years as editor-in-chief of The Observer, I've been in charge of coordinating a staff of 10 students or more, while at the same time creating a connection between the faculty and staff with the students by building relationships with all the different groups of people on campus, including top administrators and college officials.”

Congratulations to this outstanding student!  Sara will be receiving a medal from our office recognizing her accomplishments.
