Congratulations to Giselle Valdes, Miami Dade College Eduardo J. Padron Campus, for being awarded as the FCSAA Publications Student of the Month for October! She was nominated by her advisor, Emily Sendin.
Here is what we learned about Giselle from Emily: "Giselle Valdes has been a part of Urbana literary and arts magazine since fall 2018. From the start, she showed immediate interest in being an active staff member. As an English editor, she overlooked the submission process, while at the same time providing feedback and support to writers. This year, as Co-Editor-in-Chief of volume 13, Giselle collaborative works with team members; she conducts meetings, organizes the agenda, assigns tasks to members, develops new initiatives, and motivates staff members. Giselle’s passion for writing is an asset to Urbana. Her enthusiasm is infectious and positively affects all around her.
Giselle has been an engaged member of her community. Being helpful to those around her brings joy to her life and positively impacts her social interactions. She has participated in beach clean-ups, fundraising walks, activities around campus for recreational purposes, internships, and conferences that have brought about change. She is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa and is an e-board member of the Student Government Association. She represents SGA in CASSC meetings and voices her opinion about decisions on class requirements and descriptions. She has volunteered at events such as Nicklaus Hospital’s Diamond Ball and Phi Theta Kappa’s On-Par for Cancer 5K Walk. She takes initiative by providing a multitude of options for different events that can be pursued during SGA meetings and constantly tries to find ways to recruit members that are eager to participate and collaborate with the community. Giselle has also been interning at the 11th Circuit Courthouse with Judge Milian in the Criminal Justice Department since Spring 2018."
A big congratulations to Giselle, our Publications Student of the Month for October, and thank you to Emily Sendin for nominating her!
