Congratulations to Miss Mariantonieta Chavez, a student at Miami Dade College - InterAmerican Campus, selected as the Florida College System Activities Association Publications Division Student of the Month for January. She was nominated by Professor Emily Sendin.
Here’s what we learned about Mariantonieta: “Mariantonieta joined Urbana Literary & Arts Magazine as soon as she started her first semester at Miami Dade College. During the academic year of 2016-2017, she served as Spanish editor, English editor, and photographer. As a member of the staff, she organized all written pieces and photographs inside the magazine. She was also involved in the approval decision for all submissions. Besides taking part in the making of the magazine, she published several pieces of her own, such as nonfiction stories, poetry, and visual work. As she received valuable feedback from the co-advisors of the magazine throughout the year, she grew into a better writer and photographer. As a result, she was awarded third place in photography and third place in the on-the-spot contest at the Florida College System Press Association Annual Conference. The greatest accomplishment, however, was definitely the team recognition obtained afterwards: Urbana Literary & Arts Magazine won Second Place General Excellence in the Florida College System Activities Association (Publications Division). She and the team invested more than 100 hours in the construction of the magazine, but she shared that it never felt like work. She gladly contributed to the creation of volume 10 of Urbana, making the voice of many students heard, and due to her commitment, she was chosen to be co-editor-in-chief for volume 11.”
Congratulations to this outstanding student, and our thanks to Ms. Sendin for taking the time to nominate her for this recognition.
