Congratulations to Melvin Cooper, Broward College, our Student Government Division Student of the Month for January! He was nominated by his advisor Joseph Pickering.
Here’s what Melvin’s advisor had to say about him and the quality individual he is: “Melvin is an outstanding student leader at Broward College. He is employed as a work study employee in student life and manages to maintain high involvement in multiple clubs and organizations. He is involved with Student Government, the English Honor Society (SKD), and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Melvin also manages a rigorous academic schedule in the Bachelor's program at Broward College and has maintained an outstanding GPA. In addition to Melvin's leadership and service provided in multiple roles at the college, he has completed an internship with the IT office, and manages to volunteer for events in our local community that support various organizations including the American Cancer Society, Humane Society, and the Broward Outreach Center (Homeless Shelter).
Melvin is an incredible leader within the clubs he serves (SG, SKD, and PTK) and also as a student and employee. He demonstrates a style of servant leadership that is second to none. Melvin goes above and beyond to capture the voices of his fellow students at the college and brings those concerns to the administration to find solutions for the issues of Broward students. He is a great leader and I look forward to the astonishing impacts he will continue to make here at Broward College and beyond when he graduates.”
Faculty and staff help better the lives of students every day, but it is not often that we see a student impact an advisor’s life the way Joseph Pickering describes Melvin has done for him. These words are a great reminder of how far small teachings can go from turning a student into a leader the faculty will always remember. Congratulations to this remarkable student, and our thanks to Joseph Pickering for taking the time to nominate Melvin Cooper for this recognition.
